JPG, PNG and WebP compared
| Format | Best for | Transparency | Compression |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, email, social media | No | Lossy |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, sharp graphics | Yes | Lossless |
| WebP | Websites, small files with good quality | Yes | Lossy or lossless |
Choosing the right format
Use JPG for photographs and images with many colors. It makes small files and is supported everywhere. Use PNG when you need a transparent background or crisp edges, for example for logos, icons and screenshots. Use WebP for websites, where it often produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality.
Limits to know about
- Animated GIFs are converted to a single still image (the first frame).
- HEIC/HEIF and camera RAW files cannot be opened by most browsers.
- Some browsers, notably Safari, cannot create WebP files. In that case the image is saved as PNG instead and you are told.
- Very large images may fail on phones with limited memory.
Private by design
Your images are converted by your own browser using the built-in canvas feature. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe to use with personal photos and documents. The page also works offline once it has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens inside your browser, so your images never leave your device and nobody else can see them.
What image formats can I convert?
You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files and save them as JPG, PNG or WebP. Some browsers can also open AVIF files.
Why did my PNG file get bigger?
PNG is a lossless format, so photos converted from JPG often become much larger. For photos, JPG or WebP usually gives a smaller file.
What happens to transparent backgrounds when I convert to JPG?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
What quality setting should I use?
A quality of about 90% gives a good balance between size and sharpness. Lower values such as 70-80% make smaller files with some visible loss. The setting does not apply to PNG.
Can I convert an animated GIF?
Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted, because the result is a single still image.
Why can't I open my HEIC or RAW photo?
Most browsers cannot read HEIC/HEIF or camera RAW files. Convert them to JPG on your phone or computer first, or export a JPG from your photo app.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
There is no limit set by this site, but very large images or many files at once can be slow or fail on phones, because everything is processed by your device.
