How to convert radiation absorbed dose

Absorbed dose is the energy deposited by radiation per kilogram of material. The SI unit is the gray (Gy), and the older unit is the rad.

Every radiation absorbed dose unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the Gy. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert rad to Gy, multiply by 0.01. To go the other way, divide by 0.01.

The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Worked examples

10 rad = 0.10 Gy10 × 0.01 = 0.10 Gy.
25 Gy = 25 rad25 × 1 = 25 rad.
5 mGy = 5 mrad (dose)5 × 1 = 5 mrad (dose).
50 kGy = 50,000 Gy50 × 1,000 = 50,000 Gy.
