How to convert data transfer rate

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbit/s), while downloads and disks are usually shown in megabytes per second (MB/s). There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbit/s connection moves at most 12.5 MB/s.

Every data transfer rate unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the bit/s. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert Mbit/s to MB/s, multiply by 0.125. To go the other way, divide by 0.125.

The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Worked examples

10 Mbit/s = 1.25 MB/s10 × 0.125 = 1.25 MB/s.
25 MB/s = 200 Mbit/s25 × 8 = 200 Mbit/s.
5 Gbit/s = 625 MB/s5 × 125 = 625 MB/s.
50 Gbit/s = 50,000 Mbit/s50 × 1,000 = 50,000 Mbit/s.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB/s is 100 Mbit/s?

100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s, because you divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.

How long does a download take?

Divide the file size by the speed in the same units. A 1 GB file at 100 Mbit/s (12.5 MB/s) takes about 80 seconds in ideal conditions; real speeds are usually lower.

How do I convert Mbit/s to MB/s?

Multiply the value in Mbit/s by 0.125 to get MB/s. For example, 10 Mbit/s = 1.25 MB/s.

How many MB/s is 1 Mbit/s?

1 Mbit/s = 0.125 MB/s, and 1 MB/s = 8 Mbit/s.

Does this data transfer rate converter work offline?

Yes. After the page has loaded once, all calculations run in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection.
