Quick reference table
Common electric field strength conversions
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 kV/m | 1,000 V/m |
| 1 V/cm | 100 V/m |
| 1 kV/cm | 100 kV/m |
| 1 V/mm | 1,000 V/m |
How to convert electric field strength
Electric field strength tells how much voltage change there is per unit of distance. It is used in electrical safety, insulation design and electromagnetic compatibility.
Every electric field strength unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the V/m. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert kV/m to V/m, multiply by 1,000. To go the other way, divide by 1,000.
The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Frequently asked questions
How many V/m is 1 kV/cm?
One kilovolt per centimeter is 100,000 volts per meter.
How do I convert kV/m to V/m?
Multiply the value in kV/m by 1,000 to get V/m. For example, 10 kV/m = 10,000 V/m.
How many V/m is 1 kV/m?
1 kV/m = 1,000 V/m, and 1 V/m = 0.001 kV/m.
Does this electric field strength converter work offline?
Yes. After the page has loaded once, all calculations run in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection.
