How to convert magnetic flux density

Magnetic flux density (the strength of a magnetic field) is measured in tesla in the SI system and in gauss in older CGS usage. The Earth's field is roughly 25 to 65 microtesla, or about half a gauss.

Every magnetic flux density unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the T. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert G to mT, multiply by 0.1. To go the other way, divide by 0.1.

The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Worked examples

10 G = 1.0 mT10 × 0.1 = 1.0 mT.
25 mT = 25 G25 × 1 = 25 G.
5 T = 5 G5 × 1 = 5 G.
50 G = 0.0050 T50 × 0.0001 = 0.0050 T.

Frequently asked questions

How many gauss is 1 tesla?

One tesla is 10,000 gauss.

How do I convert G to mT?

Multiply the value in G by 0.1 to get mT. For example, 10 G = 1.0 mT.

How many mT is 1 G?

1 G = 0.1 mT, and 1 mT = 1 G.

Does this magnetic flux density converter work offline?

Yes. After the page has loaded once, all calculations run in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection.
