How to convert voltage

Voltage is electric potential difference. Batteries and electronics use volts and millivolts, while power lines use kilovolts and megavolts.

Every voltage unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the V. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert V to mV, multiply by 1. To go the other way, divide by 1.

The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Worked examples

10 V = 1 mV10 × 1 = 1 mV.
25 mV = 0.025 V25 × 0.001 = 0.025 V.
5 kV = 5,000 V5 × 1,000 = 5,000 V.
50 V = 0.05 kV50 × 0.001 = 0.05 kV.

Frequently asked questions

How many millivolts are in a volt?

There are 1,000 millivolts (mV) in one volt.

How do I convert V to mV?

Multiply the value in V by 1 to get mV. For example, 10 V = 1 mV.

How many mV is 1 V?

1 V = 1 mV, and 1 mV = 0.001 V.

Does this voltage converter work offline?

Yes. After the page has loaded once, all calculations run in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection.
