How to convert heat density

Heat density (energy per volume) is used for fuels, heat storage and steam. A higher value means more energy in the same space.

Every heat density unit is a fixed multiple of one base unit, the J/m³. To convert a value, multiply it by the size of the starting unit and divide by the size of the target unit. For example, to convert kWh/m³ to MJ/m³, multiply by 3.6. To go the other way, divide by 3.6.

The converter above does this for you and shows the exact formula under the result.

Worked examples

10 kWh/m³ = 36 MJ/m³10 × 3.6 = 36 MJ/m³.
25 MJ/m³ = 6.9444444 kWh/m³25 × 0.2777777778 = 6.944444444 kWh/m³.
5 BTU/ft³ = 186.29473 kJ/m³5 × 37.25894581 = 186.2947290 kJ/m³.
50 kJ/m³ = 1.3419596 BTU/ft³50 × 0.02683919199 = 1.341959600 BTU/ft³.
